ICG 2016 – the Games are open
An unforgettable week in the Heart of the Alps was declared open. The International Children’s Games were declared open at the Olympiaworld Innsbruck with a festive ceremony yesterday. A very special moment – not only for the young athletes.
The 7th International Children’s Winter Games were opened with a sensational show. Innsbruck and the Tyrol are ready for the competitions of around 600 athletes aged 12 to 15 as well as for the 31 medal competitions and the 1st Tyrolean School Winter Games.
The programme of the opening ceremony went round in circles – colourful bubbles, balls and discs. Under the motto “sport connects people and crosses the borders of cities, religions and ethnicities”, the spectators experienced an interesting and diverse programme. The mayor of Innsbruck Mag. Chris-tine Oppitz-Plörer wished the athletes that were the centre of the opening ceremony, all the best for the competition as well as “unforgettable moments, new friendships and a memorable time in Inns-bruck” in her speech.
The opening ceremony was the emotional start of the ICG 2016 in Innsbruck, the Axamer Lizum, Götzens, Mutters, Seefeld and Telfs. After the entrance of the delegations and the official ceremony, music, dance and show acts were presented. Among others, the ICG 2016 Dancecompany “I Can Groove” delivered an amazing performance. The Song of Innsbruck, which was written for the ICG 2016, was performed for the first time by a brass band and the 5 m high, glowing, soft giant “Dundu” was a true eye-catcher.
Inspiring Olympic spirit 40 years after the Olympic Winter Games in 1976, the fire of friendship and respect was kindled by the former Tyrolean ICG athlete and successful speed skater Viola Feichtner. The ICG are the fifth major sporting event with various disciplines taking place in Tyrol – after both Olympic Games, the Universiade 2005 and the Youth Olympic Games. All of them were initiated by the IOC.
In his video message, the IOC president Thomas Bach brought a few important things back to mind – on the one hand, we should remember the special atmosphere that prevailed during the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, on the other hand, we should be proud of Innsbruck having hosted the Olympic Games multiple times. “The Olympic spirit of Innsbruck will surely inspire everyone at these Children’s Games”, said Thomas Bach.
The Tyrolean governor Günther Platter was euphoric looking ahead to the upcoming days and warmly welcomed all young people in Tyrol: “We are delighted to welcome the many international guests, who will enrich Innsbruck and the whole region in the next days. The young people are going to be the centre of attention in the next days. We wish you spectacular competitions and a lot of positive im-pressions”.
