ICG 2016 are the first multi-sport event organised as a Green Event

As part of the society, the organising committee of the Innsbruck 2016 International Children’s Games (ICG) feels strongly about ecological, economic and social sustainability. Therefore, it is a pleasure to have received the “Green Event Tirol” certification.

“The Innsbruck 2016 International Chidren’s Games are the world’s first multi-sport event ever being realised as a Green Event. We are very proud of our measures and our partners, who strongly support us with the implementation. Without their help, the realisation of such a major event in the form of a Green Event would not have been possible” Georg Spazier, Chief Executive Officer of the innsbruck-tirol sports GmbH (ITS), entrusted with the organisation and realisation of the ICG.
The process of the ITS, which was formed as the successor company of the Innsbruck-Tirol Youth Olympic Games 2012 GmbH, is based on the check list for sustainability of the Klimabündnis Tirol (Climate Alliance Tirol). The defined measures and objectives are kept under constant review. For that reason the ITS is in close contact with the partners Klimabündnis Tirol and Umwelt Verein Tirol (Environment Association Tirol) and regularly exchanges information even after the certification as Green Event Tirol. “It is great to see that the organisers demonstrate that winter sport events can be realised as ‘Green Events’. The proper and sustainable treatment of the environment should become a trademark of the region of the Tyrol”, the Deputy Governor Ingrid Felipe explains.

Environmentally friendly transport with to the competitions the IVB
The venues of the ICG, as well as the accommodation of the delegation are in a 25 km radius within and around Innsbruck. They can be optimally reached by public transport in the Tyrol.
The IVB (Innsbruck Transportation Company) are the official carrier of the ICG and take care of the safe and environmentally friendly transport of around 1000 international guests and 700 volunteers between the venues in and around Innsbruck. All IVB busses are labelled for this service. The IVB Chief Executive Officer Martin Baltes explains: “Our colleagues have a lot of experience in implementing major events. After the YOG 2016 we now also look forward to being the Official Carrier of the ICG.”
Since the summer Yosi – the official mascot of the ICG 2016 – has been riding with the IVB bus through Innsbruck every day. The small chamois loves taking the bus and should draw young persons’ attention to climate and environmentally friendly mobility.

This makes the ICG a Green Event
Every decision the organising committee of the ICG makes is in accordance with climate and environmental protection, resource conservation, as well as social equality and regional added value. Not only when it comes to transport, but also recycling, catering of the participants and the production of banners and further advertising material. The green initiatives are visible in all areas of the ICG. Therefore, the athletes and volunteers receive a refillable drinking bottle at the beginning of the games. They can refill the bottles for free at the drink stations instead of using plastic non-reusable bottles. Printing material such as flyers, folders and posters are only printed in small quantities and in an environmentally friendly way. Everything that does not necessarily have to be printed, can be downloaded online.

The ICG show social responsibility
700 committed volunteers will connect gender, generation, ethnicity and nationality at the ICG. Personal skills and competences are introduced and promoted to reach one goal together.

Accessibility
All venues of the ICG 2016 are accessible and suitable for wheelchairs. The sport venues (Axamer Lizum, Muttereralmpark, Olympiaworld, Götzens, Telfs, Seefeld, Innsbruck Exhibition Centre) have accessible parking spaces and toilets. There are also accessible areas for wheelchairs at the indoor events.

All sport competitions and side programme activities of the ICG are free of charge and you do not require a ticket.

The organising committee and the international participants look forward to your visit at the ICG!
